I apologize for my sloth in evaluating the above. Being new to the process, I was conscientously fumbling my way through, giving the article multiple readings and taking offline notes. A more proficient reviewer "played through", so to speak.

I did learn some interesting facts about the Revolution in the process. I thank you for the article that exposed me to them.

I am such a greenhorn at this that I did not realize that you needed more than one approval for an A-class assessment. I thought another editor had beaten me to the approval.

@Georgejdorner:: Not a problem! ACR generally takes supports from three reviewers who performed fairly comprehensive reviews. You can also specialize in reviewing certain things: Prose (style & spelling); Images (free use tags, captions, formatting); Citation (footnotes and bibliography, as well as spot-checking information in sources); Formatting (MOS compliance, etc.); or you can do like I do and just assess everything together. After you've completed your review, you can Support, Oppose, or state that you're weakly supporting or weakly opposing something due to one issue that hasn't been resolved. Hope this helps! Not about rating the article...just a general question. Can you tell me, or refer me to, any further information about conscription during the Revolution? I had always thought it a practice that only began during the Civil War.

I'll have to dig through my sources, but there were several states with enforced militia service for white, "unscrupulous" (ie: non-Quakers), adult men. There wasn't a federal (or Congressional) draft, but there also wasn't effectively a Centralized recruitment effort. Recruitment of all Continental soldiers was done at the state level. As a native Marylander, I had a great deal of Revolutionary War history dinned into me. I am familiar with the scattered recruitment practices for American troops. It's just that I have never before heard of conscription during that era. The earliest use of conscription I know of is by the Confederacy in 1862.

There are two WP:RFCs at WP:FOUR. The first is to conflate issues so as to keep people from expressing meaningful opinions. The second, by me, is claimed to be less than neutral by proponents of the first. Hey Clark, I hope you're well! After reading your Milhist coordinator nomination statement (esp. "I want to be more involved in the community"), I was curious to know if you'd be interested in contributing to the Signpost's "Featured content" section, which summarizes the English Wikipedia's new featured material on a weekly basis. The two people currently involved are looking to do the "Discussion report" (Pine) and trying to balance their time between other Wikimedia roles (Hahc21). In addition to the summaries, you'll have editorial independence to seek out underappreciated topic areas and editors to tell their stories to a relatively wide readership on the English Wikipedia and around the Wikimedia movement. @King jakob c 2: Jakob, see my notes on the GA page. I think at this point I think it'll be worth it to fail the GA for now, and to give you some thoughts to improve. I think biggest issue is structure and the style; one thing that's not an issue is your drive and passion for the subject. Keep those things, and you'll get this improved well enough. Robert Howe (1732–86) was a Continental Army general from North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. He was one of only five general officers, and the only major general, in the Continental Army from that state. At the outset of the war, he was appointed a brigadier general in the Continental Army, and eventually became commander of the Southern Department. His early military career was contentious and consumed by conflict with political and military leaders in Georgia and South Carolina. These confrontations, including a 1778 duel with Christopher Gadsden, and Howe's reputation as a womanizer eventually led to his removal from command over the Southern Department. Prior to the formal turnover of his command, Howe commanded the Continental Army and Patriot militia forces in defeat in the First Battle of Savannah. He later sat as a senior officer on the court-martial board that sentenced British officer John André, a co-conspirator of Benedict Arnold, to death. Howe himself was accused of attempting to defect to the British, but the accusations were cast aside at the time as a British stratagem. He died in December 1786 after being elected to the North Carolina House of Commons. (Full article...)

This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

• THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
• Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

It can get quite lonely tinkering with peer review...

With a bit of effort we can renovate the place to look like this!

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

• {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
• {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. I recently overhauled the whole thing, replacing the article I wrote in 2006 and that had slowly improved over the following 14 years through small efforts by myself and others over that time. I think the new article is a major improvement and hopefully worth getting the article's status upgraded, but before I request that upgrade, I put out a request for peer review.
