Notes

Oh my God THANK YOU SO MUCH for providing this link, I was about to ask for a bigger sized picture yet not as big as 18k×18k version. Thanks a lot! — Yurei-eggtart 09:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE: Simply right click on the file name and select "Save Target As" best of luck PurpleCrow (talk) 09:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Huge

I wanted to download this image, but I have dial-up and I can't because it's huge. I know there's a smaller version, but it's not as detailed. Could someone put it in another format that has better compression so I can still see it in all its glory without a huge download? Nick Warren 01:08, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

My Firefox 1.5.8, Windows, complains that the jpeg has errors. Can anybody confirm this? - Samsara (talk  contribs) 02:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Samsara, this image is too large to load in your browser, it needs to be saved and loaded in an image editor. Try GIMP, but even with a good computer it will be slow. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 04:23, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
The warning should come first, then a new window opens to the image. stupid. Adam Wang 03:39, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
That is not techically possible with the way the wiki software works or that what I would have done, no need for name calling. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 04:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
DIdn't mean to insult you. Was calling the system stupid. Adam Wang 21:58, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
No worries, the system does need a system for dealing with HUGE files. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 22:09, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Wow, that thing is almost as big as my first hard drive (20 MB) :P AbstractClass 16:27, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I said "big" and "hard drive", eh heh, heh heh, heh heh. AbstractClass 16:28, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

JPG?

What is the point of having a huge picture with JPG compression on it, you would get more detail out of a smaller image with zip compression (or something else non-lossy). I don't get it.

The uncompressed TIFF version of the image is 385 MB (you can download it from the NASA page that's linked), which is probably why the much smaller JPEG was chosen. Even with PNG compression, the filesize will still be huge. --Chaos386 10:34, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
We would have chosen the largest, but Wikipedia currently has a 20mb filesize limit and does not support TIFFs. Thanks for answering this before I chould Chaos. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 14:59, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Doesn't work

As of 10 am Eastern time and continuing at least until 1 pm Eastern (at which time this was written and submitted), the download simply doesn't work. On my 300KB/s broadband connection I get 300KB/s for about one second, and then the throughput completely tanks. Network activity monitor shows an initial spike and then a virtually flat line. If the server is fouled up or overloaded and there are arbitrary size limits being imposed by unaccountable persons and various other problems, perhaps a bittorrent would have been more useful ... :)--74.104.131.76 18:02, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

The image was picture of the day. That means it is the most popular file for that day, and it was a big one, I bet the servers got overloaded. Once it is no longer picture of the day it should be better. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 23:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
All the more reason to provide a torrent.--74.104.131.76 02:38, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Don't forget, you can always get the original file from NASA too. howcheng {chat} 23:58, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
You're joking. That version's supposed to be over 300MB.--74.104.131.76 02:38, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Now someone's gone and deleted it! The link's now to a 404 page!

The link is at the very top of this page and it still works for me. howcheng {chat} 04:25, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
What link? The link to the 18kx18k image? I just tried it again and the "jpg" file I get doesn't work and is only 600-odd bytes long. Renaming it to end in "html" I see it says Error 404 and some other crap.
Nevermind, seems to be working now, and with 350KB/s throughput all the way through.--74.104.131.76 19:42, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
The link at the very top of this page, takes you to NASA. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 15:11, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Some work and some don't.

The 10,000 x 10,000 size image does not load. It comes up with an error message instead. Also, I would suggest that is a mistake to upload huge images that no one can handle or would want to store on their hard disks. An upper limit of ten megabytes should be aimed at. -- Brothernight (talk) 17:31, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
